How outdoor gyms can help housing association tenants
Extensive research has shown outdoor gyms are an ideal solution to help individuals lead more active and healthy lives. With rising obesity levels and the Olympics on its way, outdoor gyms are a proven way to break down the barriers to fitness.
The gyms are installed in a similar way to playgrounds in parks and open spaces and represent an excellent use of available green spaces. They replicate an indoor gym with a range of easy to use cardiovascular, strength and tone equipment. TGO’s high quality gyms are installed outdoors, weatherproof and extremely robust. Most importantly, they are free to use by anyone at anytime with no need for expensive membership fees.
Experience to date
TGO has previously worked with Councils, Primary Care Trusts and National Health Services to install gyms in over 250 parks and open spaces throughout the UK.
TGO is partners with sportswear giant adidas. Together they created the London 2012 Olympic branded sports and fitness spaces called adizones. Federation members can now access exclusive discounts on adiZones, giving members a piece of the Olympics in the heart of their communities.
TGO has installed 55 adiZones nationally so far through a programme which has been evaluated by global measurement company – Nielson. Their surveys showed that the adiZone appealed to a wide range of people and that 76% of the young people interviewed were more active as a result of it.
Through the specially negotiated discounts, Federation members will now be able to access exclusive discounts on adiZones as well TGO’s other outdoor gym packages.
Building communities
Outdoor gyms offer Federation members a facility that can help create healthier lifestyles and more cohesive communities.
Statistics have shown outdoor gyms appeal to a wide range of users from the most inactive groups to the fittest. Camden NHS for example, who installed 8 gyms, showed that 26% of their TGO gym users were previously inactive.
TGO gyms have also been used by the police as a crime diversionary activity for antisocial behaviour. Strathclyde police, who installed a TGO gym back in 2007, saw an 8% reduction in crime in the estate where the outdoor gym was installed as part of a range of schemes and activities.
High quality products
All TGO gyms are built in the UK, having moved manufacturing back to the UK from China, demonstrating their commitment to boosting the local economy. Manufactured in Norfolk, the equipment boasts high quality of steel, welding fabrication and finishing.
TGO gyms are unique in their safety standards. They are the only outdoor gyms compliant to EN1176, EN957 and key elements of the inclusive fitness initiative. This means that hazardous crush points, sharp edges, sheer points and unrestricted pendulums have been removed in the design making the gym equipment safe for all groups. This is especially great news for the young people living in member’s estates.
